Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Custom: Choosing an eCommerce Platform in the UAE

Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom-built store? We compare cost, payments, Arabic, VAT, delivery and SEO for UAE businesses — and tell you which we would choose for yours.

The short answer

Shopify suits most shops that want to sell quickly with little technical upkeep. WooCommerce suits businesses that want full ownership, deep control over content and SEO, or a store inside an existing WordPress website. A custom-built store only makes sense when your selling process is genuinely unusual — trade pricing, complex quoting, or tight links to your own systems.

Choosing the platform for your online store is one of the few website decisions that is expensive to change later. Move platforms in two years and you will pay to rebuild the store, migrate products and customers, and protect your Google rankings along the way.

We build stores on all three routes for businesses across the UAE — from jewellery and home fragrance to marine equipment — so we see the trade-offs every week. This guide compares Shopify, WooCommerce and custom builds on the points that matter most to a UAE business: cost, payments, Arabic, VAT, delivery, SEO and the effort of running the store day to day.

When Shopify is the right choice

Shopify is a hosted platform: Shopify looks after the servers, security and updates, and you pay a monthly plan. For many product businesses in Dubai, that peace of mind is worth the subscription.

Choose Shopify if:

  • You want to launch quickly and spend your time selling, not maintaining software
  • Your catalogue is straightforward — products, variants, collections
  • Your team is not technical and wants a simple admin, including a good mobile app
  • You plan to sell on social media and marketplaces as well as your own site

Watch out for: app subscriptions. Many features — reviews, filters, bundles, Arabic translation — come from paid apps, and five or six apps can cost more than the plan itself. Transaction fees also depend on which payment gateway you use. Our Shopify website design service includes planning the apps up front so there are no surprises.

When WooCommerce is the right choice

WooCommerce turns a WordPress website into a store. The software is free; you pay for hosting and any premium extensions. Because it lives inside WordPress, your store, your blog and your service pages all sit in one system.

A store with rich content and gift collections, like Heal Home, benefits from WooCommerce’s flexibility.

Choose WooCommerce if:

  • Content and SEO are central to how you win customers — guides, blogs, rich category pages
  • You want to own your store outright and host it wherever you like
  • You already have a WordPress website and want to add a shop to it
  • You need unusual product options, B2B pricing or custom checkout fields

Watch out for: upkeep. A WooCommerce store needs good hosting, regular updates and backups. That is very manageable — it is exactly what a maintenance plan is for — but it should be in your budget from day one. See our WooCommerce development page for what we include.

When a custom-built store makes sense

A custom store is programmed specifically for your business. It is the most flexible option and the most expensive, so it only pays off in specific situations:

  • Your products are configured or quoted rather than simply added to a basket
  • Your store must sync tightly with an ERP, warehouse or trade-account system
  • You serve several countries with different catalogues, prices and rules
  • You have tried Shopify or WooCommerce and genuinely outgrown them

If none of those apply, a well-built Shopify or WooCommerce store will serve you better for a fraction of the cost. Our eCommerce development team can tell you honestly which route fits.

Selling in the UAE: what your platform must handle

Payment gateways

Your customers expect to pay by card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and increasingly with buy-now-pay-later options such as Tabby and Tamara. Shopify and WooCommerce both connect to a range of gateways that operate in the UAE — Stripe, Checkout.com, Telr and Network International among them. Each gateway has its own approval process, fees and payout times, so choose it early; approval can take a few weeks. We cover this in our payment gateway integration service.

VAT

Prices, receipts and invoices need to show VAT at 5% correctly. Both platforms handle tax settings well, but the set-up should be checked against your VAT registration — the Federal Tax Authority publishes the rules, and your accountant can confirm the details for your business.

Arabic and English

If you sell to Arabic-speaking customers, your product names, descriptions and checkout should be available in Arabic with a proper right-to-left layout. WooCommerce handles bilingual stores well with a translation plugin; Shopify supports multiple languages through its markets and translation apps. Either way, plan the Arabic content from the start — it is far harder to add later. See our Arabic website design page for more.

Delivery and cash on delivery

Delivery rules in the UAE often differ by emirate, and cash on delivery is still popular in some categories. Make sure your platform can set delivery prices by emirate, offer same-day or next-day options, and connect to your courier if you ship in volume.

Tip

Write down how an order travels from “Buy now” to the customer’s door — payment, packing, courier, returns. The platform that makes that journey simplest for your team is usually the right one.

SEO: which platform ranks better?

Both Shopify and WooCommerce can rank very well on Google. The platform matters far less than the work done on it: unique product descriptions instead of copied supplier text, sensible category pages, fast loading and clean page structure.

WooCommerce has the edge when content is your main growth channel, because WordPress makes it easy to publish guides, build rich category pages and control every technical detail. Shopify is perfectly capable for most stores, with a few fixed rules about how addresses are structured. Our eCommerce SEO service works on both.

What does each option really cost over three years?

Comparing platforms on build price alone is misleading. Look at the cost of building and running the store for three years:

  • Shopify: build cost + monthly plan × 36 + app subscriptions × 36 + payment fees
  • WooCommerce: build cost + hosting × 3 years + extension renewals + maintenance + payment fees
  • Custom: build cost + hosting + ongoing developer time for every change

For a typical UAE store selling a few hundred products, Shopify and WooCommerce usually come out within a similar range over three years; a custom store costs considerably more. The deciding factors are usually how much content you publish and how much control you want.

Our recommendation

For most businesses we speak to in Dubai:

  1. A product brand starting out — Shopify. Fast, reliable and easy to run.
  2. A business that sells and publishes content, or already has a WordPress site — WooCommerce.
  3. A business with a genuinely unusual sales process — talk to us about a custom build, ideally after a short discovery phase.

Whichever you choose, make sure you own your domain, your product data and your customer list, so you can move later if you ever need to.

Questions we are often asked

Is Shopify or WooCommerce better for a UAE business?

Shopify is better if you want to launch fast with little technical upkeep. WooCommerce is better if content and SEO drive your sales, you want full ownership, or you already run a WordPress website.

Which payment gateways work in the UAE?

Shopify and WooCommerce both connect to gateways that operate in the UAE, including Stripe, Checkout.com, Telr and Network International, plus buy-now-pay-later services such as Tabby and Tamara. Approval can take a few weeks, so apply early.

Can I have an Arabic online store?

Yes. Both platforms support Arabic and English stores with right-to-left layouts. Plan the Arabic content from the start — it is much harder to add once the store is live.

How much does an online store cost to build in Dubai?

With BROWSER, a Shopify or WooCommerce store starts from AED 4,500. Custom-built stores usually start around AED 20,000 because everything is programmed for your business.
